Napoli, Roma and Juventus in Axel Witsel chase

The chase for Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel is hotting up, with Italian giants Napoli, Roma and Juventus all battling to sign the 27-year-old, according to a representative from the player's agency.

  • The Zenit St. Petersburg player is signed to the Mondial Sport Management agency, and representative Giuseppe Cioffi told Radio Crc: "There’s interest from all over Europe, and there are contacts every day and Napoli are likely to be interested too.

“Napoli, as well as Roma and Juventus are possibilities, but first they need to understand how to reach the player."

Witsel joined Zenit from Benfica in 2012 for a mammoth €40 million fee.

The former Standard Liege player has one year remaining on his contract with the Russian club and has previously expressed his desire to move on at the end of the season.

It had been reported in the English press recently that Stoke City were interested in bringing Witsel to the Premier League, and had even had an offer for the player rejected in January.

But Cioffi's recent comments suggest that Serie A might be the most likely destination for the 69-cap Belgium international.

Any potential deal will have to wait until the culmination of Belgium's involvement in the UEFA European Championship in France, as Witsel will be fully focussed on helping the Red Devils deliver on the immense promise of their golden generation.
