Reports in Switzerland over the last two weeks had suggested that new Manchester United boss José Mourinho was poised to swoop for FC Basel's talented forward Breel Embolo.
But it now appears that United's interest in the 19-year-old is not as significant as had been though, and German side Schalke 04 are set to complete a move for Embolo.
Red Bull owned German club RB Leipzig were thought to be leading the chase to sign Embolo last month, but they pulled out of the running to sign the young striker-cum-winger, with United thought to be leading the chase for his signature.
But there has been a twist in the tale today, as German publication Bild are reporting that Schalke have agreed a €20 million fee with Basel, while Sky Germany claim Embolo has chosen the Gelsenkirchen club over United.
Embolo is currently on international duty with Switzerland at the UEFA European Championship in France, so and deal will only be wrapped up once his participation in the tournanent ends.
It seem highly likely that the Red Devils decided against pursuing Embolo with negotiations to bring Borussia Dortmund playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Old Trafford reaching an advanced stage, and a move for 19-year-old Bordeaux winger Adam Ounas appears to be on the cards.
