Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce wants to sign striker Eduardo Vargas as a replacement for Steven Fletcher, who departed the Black Cats last week. Vargas plays for German side Hoffenheim.
Vargas caught the eye at the recent Copa America centenary tournament.
Vargas was in insatiable form during the international tournament and Sunderland had scouts watching the Chilean in action as he helped his country to Copa America glory.
Vargas has experience playing in England, having spent one year in the country on loan at Queens Park Rangers.
Vargas can move to Sunderland for a fee of around 10 million euros.
