Could Saúl Ñiguez be set to join Man Utd?

05 July 2016 - 12:53

Super agent Jorge Mendes is pushing for his client Saúl Ñiguez to move to the Premier League this summer, and Manchester United is a possible option for the midfielder, according to reports in Spain.

  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs
  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • Sport are claiming that Mendes is keen to see Saúl move to the Premier League this summer, as the agent holds a 40 per cent stake in 21-year-old.

Atlético Madrid would be extremely unwilling to part with the young player who only signed a new contract at the end of last season. So any prospective buying club would likely have to make an offer that triggers Saúl's €80 million contractual release clause.

And even if his release clause is met, the player would have to be convinced that now is the right time for him to leave the Vicente Calderón, which would require a significant rise on his current wages, as well as the realistic prospect of sustained success at the potential new club.

Manchester United are being mentioned as a possible suitor for Saúl due to the Mendes connection; the Portuguese agent also looks after new United boss José Mourinho.

Mourinho's number one transfer target is Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, but if he is unable to convince Pogba to return to Old Trafford, Saúl may represent the perfect fall-back option.
