Man Utd and Man City to face off in EFL Cup

Mourinho and Guardiola will resume their rivalry in the EFL Cup

Man Utd and Man City to face off in EFL Cup

22 September 2016 - 10:56

Manchester United and Manchester City will face off in the EFL Cup fourth round next month, after both sides were drawn together following their respective third round victories last night.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • Last night’s EFL Cup fourth round draw threw up an intriguing fixture as Manchester City will travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United in a repeat of this month’s Manchester derby.

When the two sides met at Old Trafford on 10 September, it was City who came out victorious, as they looked impressive on their way to a 2-1 win, with goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the home team’s only goal.

Before that game, much of the media focussed their attention on the resumption of the rivalry between United boss José Mourinho, and City manager Pep Guardiola.

The two enjoyed a fractious relationship during their time as opposite number in Spain, with Mourinho in charge of Real Madrid, and Guardiola coaching rivals FC Barcelona.

And that narrative will surely resume when the two face off at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup fourth round at the end of October, with Mourinho getting the opportunity to exact revenge on his counterpart for the Premier League loss, while Guardiola will hope to further assert his dominance.

The tie will take place on 25 October.
