Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City are expected to go head-to-head in the pursuit of Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci in the New Year. The Italy international was linked with a possible switch to the Premier League over the summer.

  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • According to The Star, the pair will step up their interest for the 29-year-old with the need to bolster the defence being the main priority in January.

Bonucci had captured attention of the English duo in the previous transfer window but it is believed that they were reluctant to match Juventus' £50m asking price.

Antonio Conte's side have since had a dismal start to their campaign and they are now prepared to accept to the Old Lady's demands.

Meanwhile, Citizens boss Pep Guardiola has kept a keen interest in the Italian centre-back, and he will urge his side to get hold of the player at all costs.

Bonucci has appeared in 279 outings for the Serie A holders since arriving from Bari in the summer of 2010.
