Man Utd to go all out for Euro 2016 winner

Fonte tipped to seal Man Utd move

Man Utd to go all out for Euro 2016 winner

12 December 2016 - 06:11

Manchester United are reported to be preparing a fresh attempt to sign Southampton defender Jose Fonte in the winter transfer window. The Portuguese footballer was previously on the Red Devils radar in August.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • According to The Star, manager Jose Mourinho is desperate to have the experienced centre-back in his ranks following his side's failure to recruit the player over the summer.

Fonte, 32, was strongly tipped to secure a move to Old Trafford in the back end of the summer transfer window, but the Saints ruled out his exit as there was not sufficient time to recruit a suitable replacement.

The Star now reports that the Saints could be willing to offload their defender in the New Year after he declined to offer him an extension beyond June 2018.

Fonte has now featured in Europe for the South Coast outfit, and this is something Mourinho would favour with the veteran being eligible to participate in the club's Europa League campaign.

Southampton currently rate their skipper at around £10m.
