Fernandez confirms he will sign a fresh Swans contract

Federico Fernandez close to Swansea extension

14 February 2017 - 06:04

Swansea City defender Federico Fernandez has revealed that he is expected to sign a fresh contract at the Liberty Stadium following his impressive showing in recent weeks.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • The 27-year-old was the subject of strong interest from an unnamed English club in the summer but the Swans managed to keep hold of his services alongside fellow teammates Fernando Llorente and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Fernandez did have a shaky start to his Swans career, but he is now content to prolong his stay in south Wales on a fresh and improved deal.

"Probably in the next week I will sign a new contract," he was quoted as saying on BBC Sport. "They said I was very important for the team. They are confident in me. The offers came in, the club said no and I am happy to stay."

Fernandez provided a headed assist for Alfie Mawson's opener against Leicester City as the Swans earned a valuable 2-0 win to move four points clear of the drop zone.
