Adebayor brace seals win

Adebayor brace seals win

02 February 2008 - 16:01

Emmanuel Adebayor's ferocious goalscoring record continued today as he bagged his 20th and 21st goals of the season in a 3-1 victory over Man City at the City of Manchester in the early afternoon kick off. The victory sends the Gunners back on top and Emmanuel Adebayor was absolutely brilliant today. It was the first time City had been beaten at home in the Premiership.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • City were embarrassingly outplayed in a one-sided first half. It only took nine minutes for Arsenal to take the lead: Bacary Sagna broke down the right and cut the ball back to Adebayor, who despite the presence of Micah Richards bundled an untidy goal past Hart from six yards.

City had no answer and on 26 minutes Arsenal made it two, Clichy storming down the left wing and swinging in a cross to the far post; Adebayor headed the ball back across the box towards Eduardo, who with his back to goal hooked a shot brilliantly into the bottom left corner. A wonderful finish.

But Arsenal's desire to play football at all times nearly became their undoing. Clichy quickly undid his good work to set up Eduardo's goal barely a minute later, as he attempted to sashay upfield from his own byline - when an agricultural hoof would have done the job - and lost the ball to Vedran Corluka, who pulled the ball back to Fernandes, allowing the Swiss midfielder to sidefoot into an empty net.

The second half did bring a more aggressive looking Man City side, but they still couldn't compete with the class of Arsenal.

The statistics all told the same story - complete Arsenal domination. On this form, they are definitely more than capable of winning the Premiership.

Two minutes before the final whistle, Elano hacked down Adebayor, but referee Andre Marriner waved advantage and, after a neat interchange between Eduardo and Alexandr Hleb down the inside-right channel, the ball broke to Adebayor, who drove home from 10 yards to register his 21st goal of the season.

    City were tough

Adebayor did say after the game that he felt Man City were tough: "We knew the game was going to be tough and difficult and you could see that," Adebayor told Sky Sports 1.

"We are pleased with the performance. They played quite well and have a lot of talented players.

"When we scored the second goal you thought the game was finished but they made it difficult. But we responded very well.

"The most important thing is we have won and we are very happy with that."
