Manchester United's quest for their first ever Europa League trophy came under fire on Thursday night, but the Red Devils were able to hold out ad progress to the final on May 24, where they will meet Ajax.
United carried a 1-0 aggregate lead from the first leg against Celta Vigo, putting them as clear favourites to progress to the final. This competition appears to be manager Jose Mourinho's main priority for the remainder of the season, suggesting that victory here was imperative.
It appeared to be smooth running to the Stockholm final for the home team, when Marouane Fellaini headed them into a 2-0 aggregate lead. Entering the final ten minutes, that still appeared to be the case, but then Facundo Roncaglia got Celta Vigo level on the night, and needing just one more goal to progress.
In true hero to zero fashion, Roncaglia was soon walking off the pitch. Just three minutes after scoring the goal, he and Eric Bailly were given their marching orders, after an incident in the centre circle.
With ten men each, Celta Vigo had one last chance to knockout the world famous Manchester United, when former Manchester City striker John Guidetti appeared to have the goal at his mercy, but scuffed his effort.
United held out for their place in the final at the end of the month, where they will meet an Ajax side that held out against a Lyon comeback, to win their semi final 5-4 on aggregate.
