Antoine Griezmann has put an end to all the speculation linking him with a move away from Atletico Madrid this summer by extending his contract with the La Liga club.
The contract extension will see Griezmann receive a considerable wage increase, according to AS, and will now keep the French international at the club until 2022.
Since joining from Real Sociedad in 2014, Griezmann has become a key player for Atletico. In the 160 appearances he has made for the club he has contributed 83 goals.
Griezmann has been strongly linked with a move away from the club this summer, with a transfer to Premier League club Manchester United in particular one that many expected to happen.
Atletico Madrid are currently under a transfer ban sanctioned by FIFA, meaning that if Griezmann had forced a move, the club would be unable to replace him until January.
This ban may actually have come as a blessing in disguise for Atletico. Griezmann\'s admiration for the club was said to have made him unsettled at the thought of leaving the club in a position where they would be unable to appoint a replacement.
With Griezmann now signing the contract extension, it is likely that Atletico have also increased the release clause that is written into his deal.
