Manchester United confirm defender departure

Varela seals Penarol return

Manchester United confirm defender departure

13 August 2017 - 10:12

Manchester United have allowed the departure of Guillermo Verela to former club Penarol on a permanent basis. The 24-year-old managed just 11 appearances during his four-year spell at Old Trafford.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • Varela was United's first signing under former coach David Moyes in 2013 after he earned a five-year contract following a successful trial.

The Uruguayan therein failed to much of an impression in the first-team and was sent out on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt by Jose Mourinho last season.

United have now confirmed via their official Twitter account that Varela has rejoined hometown club Penarol where he will earn wages of around £4,000-a-week.

The statement read: "@Guille_Varela4 has left #MUFC to rejoin Penarol. All the best for the future, Guillermo!"

The Red Devils have been dependent on Antonio Valencia to perform the right-back duties in recent years, but Mourinho is on the lookout for a new recruit who could offer competition.

Manchester United begin their Premier League campaign at home against West Ham United this afternoon, and they will want nothing less than three points to open up their tally.
