Diego Simeone responds to Arsenal speculation

25 April 2018 - 19:26

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has insisted he has not spoken to Arsenal about the prospect of succeeding Arsene Wenger at the end of the campaign.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • Wenger, 68, recently announced his decision to step down from the Gunners managerial role and a number of head coaches have since been associated with the north London side.

Among those, Simeone was recommended by Gary Neville of late, but the Argentine has distanced himself from a potential move to the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking in a press conference, he said, via Goal.com: "No, I haven't spoken with anyone at Arsenal. I love it at Atletico. I see myself as a young coach and I want to observe and learn from him [Wenger]. The position he has occupied in football is wonderful."

Atletico Madrid face-off against Arsenal in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday night, and Simeone will be hoping that his side have rectified their recent away woes.

The Spanish outfit come into the game on the back of two winless games but they still possess a defence which has gained the reputation of keeping regular clean sheets.
