Gundogan happy despite German fan jeers

Germany and Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is still proud to have played for his country, despite jeers being received by the player. In a recent friendly game, Gundogan had been booed throughout the game after high profile meetings between the player and the Turkish president Erdogan.

  • Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan both had a meeting with the Turkish supremo, to the disappointment of many German fans, who booed the player throughout the game against Saudi Arabia.

The German side would win 2-1 against the Saudis, but despite the friendly nature of the game, the home fans were frustrated with Gundogan's meeting with Erdogan.

Shortly after the game, Gundogan sent a tweet to his followers, saying: "Last game before the World Cup, and still grateful to play for this country," he wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

Germany go into the World Cup in Russia as favourites to retain the tournament that they won last time around in Brazil. Gundogan is expected to play a major part in Joachim Loew's squad.
