Peter Odemwingie reacts to Nigeria's loss to Argentina

26 June 2018 - 21:00

Former West Brom striker Peter Osaze Odemwingie has said that he is proud of the Nigerian team after they lost to Argentina by two goals to one on Tuesday night.

  • Chelsea ready to sell four home-grown players
  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Aston Villa, Palmer starts

  • The Super Eagles were beaten courtesy of an 86th minute strike by Manchester United midfielder Marcos Rojo.

The defeat means that Nigeria are knocked out while Argentina go through after coming second in the group with four points.

Messi had put the Argentines one goal up in the 14th minute before Victor Moses equalised for Nigeria from the penalty spot early in the second half.

The African side look set to qualify before Rojo's goal broke the hearts of the Super Eagles who were playing a defensive game.

Speaking to the BBC, Odemwingie lamented the timing of Rojo's goal, describing it as 'terrible' because it came so late.

The defeat is the fifth time Nigeria have lost to the South Americans in the FIFA World Cup. The two time world champions defeated Nigeria in 1994, 2002, 2010, and 2014, with all the games coming in the group stage.

Argentina will now face France in the second round of the tournament.
