Uruguay coach speaks on his future after World Cup elimination

Uruguay coach speaks on his future after World Cup elimination

06 July 2018 - 17:12

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez has said that his future with the South American country is not in his hands.

  • Chelsea want to sign Lyon star to replace Jadon Sancho
  • Arsenal want to bring Aymeric Laporte back to England

  • He said this after his side lost to France by two goals to nothing in the quarter-final of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia.

"It is not up to me to decide. I still have a contract," he said, BBC reports.

The loss marked the end of a very solid tournament for the South Americans. A good number of football fans expected Uruguay to go as far as the semi-final or final, but their below par performance against Didier Deschamps side saw them crash out.

Prior to the defeat against France, Uruguay had defeated Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the second round after qualifying from the group stage with nine points.

Tabarez has been the manager of Uruguay since March, 2006, and in that time he has done well with the team.

He led them to a fourth placed finish in the 2007 Copa America and the 2010 World Cup. He led them to their 15th Copa America title in 2011 and finished fourth in the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.
