Alvaro Morata admits he considered Chelsea exit after disastrous debut season

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has admitted that he had contemplated an exit from Stamford Bridge after a disastrous debut season which saw him miss out on the World Cup with Spain.

  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • Morata joined the Blues from Real Madrid for around £60m in the summer of 2017 but he thereafter struggled to make a strong impact with just 15 goals from his 48 appearances through the 2017/18 season.

As a result, Morata's dreams of making the World Cup squad with La Roja were shattered and he has now admitted that a return to either his homeland or Italy was a possibility during the summer.

"I thought about playing again in Spain or Italy. Of course I thought it would have been happy, but you cannot always escape from reality. It was a disaster last year, I did not know where I was, I was not happy," he said via Metro.

Chelsea were linked with a number of high-profile strikers during the summer transfer window but ultimately, their failure to sign one has benefited Morata, who has commanded a regular starting role.

Nonetheless, he has netted just once in five appearances this term but he may need to improve on his goal to game ratio, if he is to cement the centre-forward position in the long run.
