Chelsea in Pole Position to seal Federico Chiesa transfer in January

Chelsea in 'Pole Position' to seal Federico Chiesa transfer in January

17 September 2018 - 07:43

Chelsea are leading the race to sign Serie A star Federico Chiesa, according to The Express.

  • Mikel Arteta insists 27yo star won't be leaving Arsenal
  • Omari Hutchinson wants to continue at Ipswich Town

  • The Fiorentina winger is one of Europe’s most exciting prospects and Juventus reportedly lodged a £50million bid for his services last summer. That offer was rejected, while Manchester United and Jose Mourinho have been credited with an interest in Chiesa.

Chiesa himself claims Fiorentina turned down bids of £63m this summer from unnamed clubs, but The Express claim Maurizio Sarri is the latest coach to monitor the 20-year-old. Sarri is weighing up a January move for Chiesa and is confident of landing the Italian. Napoli too are eager to sign Chiesa, but Chelsea are in ‘pole position’ due to their Italian rivals’ financial situation.

Sarri’s former club do not have the funds to challenge Chelsea for Chiesa should the English side officially enter the race. Napoli inflicted the first defeat of the season for Fiorentina and Chiesa on Saturday, after back-to-back wins. Chiesa already has a goal and assist to his name this campaign, as the Italy international aims to improve on the six strikes and nine assists he managed last season.

Napoli and Sarri have enjoyed a strained relationship since partings ways this summer, but the Italian has got off to a perfect start in England. Chelsea have won five games on the bounce and sit top of the Premier League table, ahead of Liverpool in second due to a superior goal difference.
