Arsenal leading the race to sign Spanish defender?

08 February 2019 - 19:40

Arsenal are in pole position to acquire the signature of left-back Alex Grimaldo from Benfica at the end of the campaign.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • The former La Masia graduate is regarded as one of the most promising defenders in the Primeira Liga and his form has caught the attention of Inter Milan, Napoli and Manchester City in recent months.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, the Gunners are deemed favourites to land the former Spain youth international with the possible assurance of a regular starting role.

The Gunners have utilised the services of Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal in the left-back position this term but Unai Emery is keen on pursuing another recruit with the latter likely to be phased out.

Monreal's deal at the Emirates was recently extended until the summer of 2020 through an extension clause but he could still be sold when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

The experienced defender has been linked with Athletic Bilbao for sometime and the Gunners could be tempted to sanction his sale, should they receive a decent offer from the Basque club.
