Manchester United assistant coach Michael Carrick is reportedly the leading candidate to succeed Rafael Benitez as the next Newcastle United boss in the summer.
The Magpies are bracing themselves for the departure of Benitez at the end of the season despite backing the Spaniard with the club-record signing of Miguel Almiron in January.
According to TEAMtalk, Benitez has restricted the opportunity to discuss a new deal with the Tyneside outfit and he could walk away from the club when his contract expires.
It is added that Carrick is the prime candidate to replace Benitez at the helm with the United favourite said to fancy entering into management before the beginning of next term.
Carrick was initially added to the United backroom staff under ex-boss United Jose Mourinho this term and he has continued with the same role under Ole Gunnar Solsksjaer, who took charge of the club on an interim basis in December.
