Former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has rejected the chance to return to the Premier League with Manchester United at the end of the season.
The Belgium international only joined Real Madrid from the Blues last summer but he finds himself fighting for his position after being dropped in Zinedine Zidane's comeback game with Los Blancos.
According to The Sun, Zidane is keen to revive the club's interest in signing De Gea in the summer with his existing deal with Manchester United due to expire at the end of the campaign.
In this regard, there had been the suggestion that Courtois could be offered to United in a straight-swap deal, but the Belgian is understood to have snubbed the opportunity to return to England.
Meanwhile, De Gea currently has just 15 months remaining on his existing deal at Manchester United and the club could be forced to sell, if the Spaniard extends his contract standoff beyond the summer.
