Manchester United are reportedly closing on the signing of defender Harry Maguire from Leicester City after agreeing on a £80m fee with the east Midlands outfit.

  • Maguire has been identified as the prime option to strengthen the club's defence this summer and they have previously failed with a £70m bid for the England international.

According to Bleacher Report, the Red Devils are on the cusp of landing the former Hull City man after agreeing to pay a world-record £80m fee for a defender.

Aside from the Red Devils, Manchester City have also failed with an opening bid for the defender, but they seem unlikely to match United's proposal, given they require to balance their books.

The Premier League holders are currently looking into the sales of Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala, but they have yet to receive a suitable package for either defender.

Maguire's transfer to Old Trafford would make him the most-expensive defender in the world surpassing the £75m fee paid by Liverpool to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton last year.
