Boro 2-2 Newc: Arca saviour

26 August 2007 - 16:19

Middlesbrough's Julio Arca rescued his club a point in the 2-2 draw with rivals Newcastle. Charles N'Zogbia had given Newcastle an early lead, but the impressive Mido equalised minutes later. Viduka's first goal for Newcastle came, but Arca stepped up late to level the game.

  • Mark Viduka's 150th goal in English football was his first for Newcastle and looked to be enough for Newcastle. However, in the 80th minute Arca picked up on to a clearance and smashed a left-foot shot into the bottom corner.

The game was a fiercely contested one, with 9 yellow cards; however Middlesbrough will feel hard done by as they controlled most of the possession.

Michael Owen could have so easily wrapped up the three points late on, but his chance went begging.

Sam Allardyce afterwards described the draw as "much like losing" as he felt his side threw away victory twice, "We feel like we've lost. We feel that having got the lead twice that should have been enough the second time around to win the game. It would have been a very precious three points."
