Advantage: Man Utd

Advantage: Man Utd

01 April 2008 - 21:56

It's advantage Manchester United as they produced a tactical master class at the San Siro; defeating Roma 2-0 thanks to goals from the perfect pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. The goals both came from sublime counter attacks; and will set United well on their way to the Champions League semi-finals.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • From the first minute it was visible that Roma had no intention to give up from their aggressive game, and they really put the guests under pressure.

However, they had no real chance to grab the first goal. Roma’s players constantly put pressure and started a siege around Man United’s area, but all their attempts ended up with no real danger for Van der Saar.

United's attempts and counter attacks did not have any result, so after half an hour, the game slowed down. Cristiano Ronaldo headed the ball home from an assist from Scholes from the right. The first half ended 1-0 in favour of the Red Devils, but in the second half Roma started aggressively again.

Mirko Vucinic had the first real chance for Roma in the second half. A great shot was brilliantly saved by Van de Saar; and Manchester United punished Roma with Wayne Rooney, who took the ball out of a chaos in the middle of Roma’s area and scored. This goal demoralised Roma’s players and trainer Spalletti who looked distraught on the touchline.

Ronaldo could've scored from distance in the 68th minute, but the ball hit the bar. United’s more open game helped Roma to created some dangerous chances though. The game opened and chances came from both sides, but the result did not change.

Roma will now require a footballing miracle to go through at Old Trafford.
