Manchester United to release midfielder on a free?

06 March 2020 - 20:08

Manchester United are reportedly yet to trigger the one-year extension clause present in the contract of midfielder Nemanja Matic.

  • Bournemouth have bid accepted to Chelsea to sign centre-back
  • Chelsea eye move for Russian goalkeeper

  • Matic's current deal with the Red Devils is due to expire at the end of the season but the club have the option to extend his stay for another year.

According to Manchester Evening News, the club's hierarchy are yet to exercise the option but a decision is likely to be made by the end of the campaign.

Matic struggled for form during the opening half of the campaign but he has become an influential player in the backend of the season where he has benefited from injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

McTominay has recently returned to first-team action following his knee ligament injury but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has continued to play Matic in a three-man midfield alongside the Scot and Fred.

The Serbia international has made 21 appearances during the course of the current campaign. He has started eight of the club's previous nine league matches and missed the one game in between due to suspension.
