Sven Goran Eriksson has revealed that Man City nearly signed Nicolas Anelka in the January transfer window. The French striker decided instead to join fellow Premiership side Chelsea after leaving Bolton Wanderers.
"It was close," said Eriksson.
"Anelka was very high on our list because he's a great footballer, the complete player in many ways - pace, strength, technique and he scores goals.
"But then Chelsea came in and it was difficult to compete with them.
"Unfortunately we have to accept that, for a footballer, if you have the choice between Chelsea and City you will choose Chelsea right now.
"In a couple of years maybe not, but that's the way it is right now."
