Manchester United planning move for Belgian star

Man United enter Mertens race

Manchester United planning move for Belgian star

11 April 2020 - 15:17

Manchester United have reportedly joined Chelsea in the race to sign Dries Mertens on a free transfer at the end of the season.

  • Chelsea expected to sell striker after loan deal
  • Arsenal defender misses training ahead of Man Utd game

  • Mertens' current contract with Napoli expires at the end of June but the deal is likely to be extended for at least a month due to the coronavirus shutdown.

Still, he is expected to head through the exit door during the summer and Gazzetta dello Sport claims that United have entered the race to secure his services.

Mertens has been attracting interest from both Chelsea and Inter Milan in recent months and the latter are prepared to offer him a contract worth £85,000-a-week.

United managed to fill their striker void with the temporary signing of Odion Ighalo from Shanghai Shenhua in January and they have been tipped to sign him on a long-term deal.

Still, reports suggest that they are prepared to look at other options. Mertens may have entered the final phase of his career but his versatility of playing anywhere in the attack may have appealed Solskjaer.
