Chelsea confirm agreement to sign Timo Werner

18 June 2020 - 11:30

Chelsea have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig to land the signature of German forward Timo Werner.

  • Arsenal to battle Napoli to sign Alexsandro Ribeiro?

  • Werner has been in top form for Leipzig this term with 32 goals and 13 assists in all competitions and he is expected to play the remaining two games of the Bundesliga season before parting ways.

It was confirmed earlier this month that the Blues had agreed to trigger the £50m release clause in his contract and the club have now revealed that the deal will go through next month subject to the player passing the medical.

"The 24-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Blues, and will remain at the German club for the rest of the Bundesliga season. He will link up with his new team-mates in July, subject to passing a medical examination," a statement on the club's official website read.

Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann had recently said that Werner would remain with the club for their Champions League campaign in August but that won't be the case.

The German outfit have already qualified for the quarter-final stage of the elite competition but they will have to cope with the absence of their main striker.

Meanwhile, Werner will become the Blues' second summer signing following the arrival of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. A deal for the Moroccan was announced in February itself.
