According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsenal could go head-to-head with AC Milan in the race to sign Dominik Szoboszlai in the next transfer window.
The north London giants were keen on signing a creative midfielder during the summer and they were heavily tipped to land Houssem Aouar.
However, they were unable to strike a deal. Their final offer of around £35m fell short of Lyon's asking price of £50m.
It is unlikely that they will afford Aouar's price tag at the midway stage of the season and Szoboszlai has been identified as the alternative.
The Hungarian has made regular goalscoring contributions for Salzburg in recent years and he has continued the good form this term.
He has bagged five goals and seven assists in just 10 matches and reports claim that Salzburg want at least £22.56m to sanction his sale.
Milan have already failed with a couple of bids below the valuation and they may now face stiff competition from the Gunners for his services.
