Chelsea are reportedly interested in bringing Dayot Upamecano to Stamford Bridge during next summer's transfer window.
The Blues bolstered their central defence in the summer with the purchase of Thiago Silva, but he is only considered a stop-gap option.
According to The Mail, the Blues are among the clubs monitoring the progress of Upamecano and could make the move to sign him in six months' time.
Upamecano signed a fresh contract with RB Leipzig earlier in the year, but it is reported that there is a release clause worth £40m which can be triggered in June.
Frank Lampard's side are currently loaded with central defensive options with the likes of Silva, Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Fikayo Tomori.
However, Rudiger and Christensen have been fancied to head through the exit door at the end of the season and they could spend part of the funds recouped on Upamecano.
Aside from the Blues, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in the former Valenciennes graduate.
