Alves: Holland player of year

Alfonso Alves of Heerenveen has been voted player of the year in Holland. The Brazilian striker notched 34 goals in 31 games and had been the subject of summer interest from Middlesbrough.

  • Phillip Cocu (now of Abu Dhabi Al-Jazira) and Alex (now of Chelsea) were voted 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Ibrahim Afellay has won the Johan Cruyff prize for best young player, and the Dutch U-21 side was voted the team of the year after their summer exploits. Guus Hiddink was rewarded with the outstanding achievement award, the "Gold Lion".
