Manchester United were interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane before they pursued Cristiano Ronaldo, Dagbladet claims.
The Red Devils made a surprise move to re-sign Ronaldo from Juventus before the summer transfer deadline, and the deal has proved worthwhile.
He has netted six goals from just 10 outings. This includes winning goals in the Champions League games against Villarreal and Atalanta.
It is now reported that Ronaldo was not the club's priority and the hierarchy were initially focused on securing an agreement for Kane.
However, they were put off by the staggering £160 million price tag. This paved the way for the stunning return of Ronaldo after 12 seasons.
Ronaldo made a sublime start on his Premier League homecoming with a brace against Newcastle United in front of the home fans.
The 36-year-old has since netted just one goal from the next five league outings which has coincided with United's poor run of form.
The club are languishing in seventh after picking up just one point in four games. They suffered an embarrasing 5-0 loss to Liverpool last weekend.
