Chelsea have emerged as favourites to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo next year, according to El Nacional.

The Uruguayan has been a key player for the Catalan giants this term, making 16 appearances across all competitions.

However, there is uncertainty over his future with his current contract expiring at the end of the 2022/23 season.

According to El Nacional, the Blues have signalled their intent to land the centre-back as they look to replace Antonio Rudiger.

It is added that owner Roman Abramovich has successfully negotiated personal terms, and a deal could be sorted in January.

The Blaugrana are facing a financial crisis at the moment, and they need to lower their wage bill by around €300 million.

Until then, the La Liga won\'t permit them to spend freely. The club could sanction the sale of Araujo at the turn of the year.

Aside from Araujo, there are doubts over the future of Ousmane Dembele, who has yet to be convinced to extend his stay.

Dembele\'s contract expires at the end of the campaign, and the club could be open to offers for his services next month.
