Blackburn edge Portsmouth

Blackburn edge Portsmouth

27 April 2008 - 14:58

Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth to virtually see off the fifth place chances of Pompey, as they now hope to win the FA Cup to guarantee European football.

  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Spurs, Gilchrist starts
  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs

  • Santa Cruz proved why Mark Hughes labelled him 'the bargain of the season' as he scored his sixth goal in seven games to see off Portsmouth.

Santa Cruz scored when he received the ball from Jason Roberts after playing a neat one-two, before smashing the ball home past young Jamie Ashdown in the Pompey goal who was in between the sticks for injured David James.

Portsmouth looked like they had their sights on other games - e.g. the FA Cup - and despite Jermain Defoe scoring a disallowed goal, never really threatened.

Mark Hughes' side now have everything to play for and can also look to the Intertoto cup in order to qualify for Europe.
