Sunderland are believed to be considering a move for Birmingham's on loan striker, Mauro Zarate, after it emerged that the Blues are unlikely to be able to afford the price tag on the Argentinian's head.
Al Sadd, the club who owns Zarate's player rights, are demanding 18 million GBP in order to let the player leave.
Birmingham are only prepared to pay £9 million; and this fee will only be paid if Premiership sruvival is secured.
It is believed Zarate has also attracted the interest of Valencia and Villarreal in Spain.
