Manchester United could return for the services of Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha when the transfer window reopens.
The Red Devils were hot on the trail of the Brazil international last summer, but Atletico had no intention to sanction his sale.
However, that is expected to change at the turn of the year. Atletico are likely to be forced to offload players to balance their books.
After their shock Champions League exit, the club are expected to face losses in the region of €30m for the rest of the season.
In order to compensate for this, they are willing to offload Cunha and it remains to be seen whether United make a fresh move.
The Red Devils were willing to pay as much as €50m last summer, but may now try to sign him for less amid Atletico's turmoil.
United's move for a new striker in the New Year may depend on Cristiano Ronaldo, who is said to be keen on leaving the club.
