Arsenal defender William Saliba may not return for the remainder of the campaign, according to The Athletic.
The Frenchman sustained a back injury against Sporting Lisbon last month and he has yet to return to team training.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has yet to provide a comeback date but it is now claimed that Saliba may not feature again.
Saliba's injury is more serious than initially predicted and the Frenchman could be sidelined for the rest of the campaign.
The news will come as a huge blow for the Gunners, who have dropped points in the last three games in his absence.
The club were in a good position in the title race but are now only five points ahead of Man City after playing two more games.
Arsenal are scheduled to face the holders at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday and a loss could end their title challenge.
The Gunners go into the game following a 3-3 draw against Southampton.
