13 May 2008 - 08:34

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen could leave the club this summer if contract negotiations do not go to plan, according to The Daily Mail.

  • The British tabloid reports that Owen could be on his way out of St. James’ Park should the club officials and his representatives don’t come down to a solution. At the heart of the current dispute is the rumour that Newcastle might slash his wage bill.

At the moment, the 28-year old England international receives £120,000 a week but the club wants to trim down that weekly sum to £80,000. This has of course infuriated Owen and his representatives who feel that the player deserves to sustain is weekly wage.

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan of course is eager to hang onto the player who has revealed one or two signs of his recovery from injuries and poor form towards the tail-end of the season. Keegan made Michael Owen the captain of his side as soon as he took charge of Newcastle in January and is said to have made Owen the center of his team building phenomenon from next season.

For Michael Own through, there are a number of options, the most feasible one being Everton. The top four sides in the Premiership have exhibited no interest whatsoever in signing the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker but Everton could well do with his services.

Michael Owen supported Everton as a boy although he graduated from the Liverpool youth academy. Owen’s father Terry himself is a former Everton player. Moreover, under manager David Moyes, Everton are moving in the right directions and Own could be tempted to play at the Goodison from next season if contract negotiations don’t go according to plan a St. Jaames’ Park.
