Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt has confirmed that Liverpool made an attempt to sign midfielder Andre this summer.
The Merseyside outfit were keen on landing the Brazilian star in the last transfer window, but Fluminense refused to do business.
The Serie A giants did not want to lose Andre midway through their season and told the Reds to wait until the start of 2024.
Their president has now acknowledged that Jurgen Klopp's side spoke directly to him regarding Andre this summer.
However, he made it clear that the midfielder was going nowhere unless they wanted to secure his signature in January.
He said: "Liverpool contacted me directly for Andre. I told their director: my friend, I don't sell Andre now."
"If you want to buy now to bring him in January, we can start talking. Or if you want to wait until December, we can do it."
Liverpool signed four midfielders in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch this summer.
They could still return for Andre in the next transfer window if Klopp needs more defensive assurance from his midfield.
