Lyon lift 7th straight title

Lyon lift 7th straight title

17 May 2008 - 20:59

French side Lyon secured their 7th consecutive Ligue 1 title thanks to a 3-1 victory over Auxerre on Saturday night. It took only one minute for Lyon to take the lead, as Karim Benzema knocked the ball home, and the French giants did not look back from there.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • Despite playing away from home, Lyon played a very attacking side, with Juninho, Kallstrom and Toulalan supporting Keita, Fred and Benzema further up.

It just took one minute for Lyon to take the lead, as a nifty one two between Benzema and Fred sent the Frenchman through and he fired past Riou in the Auxerre goal.

Just nine minutes later, Fred himself got on the scoresheet as Keita floated the ball in for the Brazilian to send home.

Lyon saw out the remainder of the first half in pole position, and managed to clinch a half time lead.

It didn't take too long into the second half for the French side to score again, and Kallstrom was the goalscorer and happy recipient to effectively wrap up the title.

Juninho teed up Réveillère for a cross on the right wing and he sent the ball in for Kallstrom to head home.

The game was pretty much over, but there was still time for a late Auxerre consolation as Tamas sent the ball in for Thomas to hit home.

Nevertheless, it was over as a match and the Ligue 1 ended with Lyon being crowned champions for a seventh straight time.
