Arsenal and Manchester United have missed out on the opportunity to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana this summer.
The Gunners and Red Devils have followed the Belgium international over the past year and it seemed that they could compete for his services.
However, the duo have been beaten to his signature by Aston Villa, who have agreed a deal worth £50m for the former Lille man.
Onana has also accepted a five-year deal from Unai Emery's side. The Belgian dreams of playing in the Champions League again.
The 22-year-old had the chance to make a fortune by moving to Saudi Arabia this summer, but he chose to continue in Europe.
The news is a potential setback for Arsenal and United, who are both looking for a marquee defensive midfielder this summer.
Onana has been signed by Villa as a replacement for Douglas Luiz, who left for Juventus recently in a multi-player exchange deal.
Villa could make more signings in the coming weeks as they prepare for their first Champions League campaign after four decades.
