'We trust him': Enzo Maresca on Robert Sanchez's error vs Man City

25 January 2025 - 21:16

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca sympathised with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez following his high-profile error against Manchester City in the Premier League.

  • Nottingham Forest agree deal to sign Chelsea target
  • Chelsea now want to sign West Ham star after Joao Pedro

  • The Blues had a good opening half at the Etihad Stadium and they scored after just three minutes on the clock. Nicolas Jackson had a brilliant chance to double the lead, but fluffed his lines.

Josko Gvardiol equalised for the Cityzens before the break. The second half started pretty much even, but Erling Haaland eventually scored after a poor piece of goalkeeping from Sanchez.

Sanchez came racing off his line and it proved a huge misjudgement as Haaland scored into an empty net. City went on to win the game 3-1 as Phil Foden netted from another defensive error.

Speaking after the game, Maresca defended his goalkeeper and backed him to make amends for his blunder, he said: "We trust Robert [Sanchez] for sure.

"He is completely aware he is making mistakes in this moment. We trust Robert. We have one entire week and we will see the reaction for the next game."

With the defeat, Chelsea have dropped to sixth in the table with 40 points.
