West Ham United are set to beat Manchester United in the race to sign Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor this summer, according to The Telegraph.
The Red Devils have been monitoring the Brazilian shot-stopper since the start of the year and it has been claimed that they could trigger the £6.2 million release clause in his contract.
However, the Hammers have now jumped ahead in the pursuit and have lodged an opening bid instead of triggering the clause. In that way, they plan to pay the fee in several instalments.
United remain interested in the experienced star, but may not enter the race unless they receive a suitable bid for second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. There are no offers for now.
The club see Victor as a deputy goalkeeper behind Andre Onana next season. With Onana's tendency to make enforced errors, he could become a permanent starter in future as well.
Victor has also been linked with Everton in the last few weeks.
