Liverpool are prepared to compete with Manchester United for the signing of Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, according to TeamTalk.
The Merseyside giants spent almost £450 million on new recruits over the summer, but there could be more money spent at the turn of the year.
A new centre-back is likely to be signed after a deadline day setback on Marc Guehi. Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute.
The Premier League holders are expected to return of the Englishman in the next transfer window, but are open to pursuing an alternative as well.
The Reds could also pursue a defensive midfielder. Wharton has emerged as a top solution for the club's hierarchy for the future transfer windows.
United are also weighing up a move for the former Blackburn Rovers graduate and could now face fierce competition from their fierce rivals for Wharton.
Palace could sanction Wharton's sale for more than £60 million.
