Arsenal are weighing up a summer move for Emmanuel Fernandez after the Rangers centre-back’s breakout season in Scotland, with Mikel Arteta keen to add power and goal threat to his defensive options.
Fernandez, still only 24, has emerged as one of the most eye-catching defenders in the Scottish Premiership this campaign. Signed from Peterborough for a modest fee, he has rapidly developed into a key figure at Ibrox, combining physical dominance with an unexpected ability to contribute in the final third. Standing at nearly two metres tall, he has become a major weapon from set pieces, something Arsenal have increasingly prioritised in recent seasons.
His numbers underline just how impactful his season has been. Fernandez has made around 28 appearances in all competitions, starting the majority of those matches, and has scored 6 goals from centre-back.
Beyond raw numbers, Fernandez’s rise has been recognised more broadly, earning him a place in the Scottish Premiership Team of the Year for 2025–26.
That recognition reflects not just his goal contributions but his consistency, aerial dominance, and composure in high-pressure situations. His form has also translated onto the international stage, where he recently broke into the Nigeria national team and scored on his second appearance.
Arsenal’s interest is rooted in tactical fit as much as performance. Arteta has been building a squad capable of controlling games physically as well as technically, and Fernandez offers a different profile to the club’s current centre-backs. His aerial ability, presence in both boxes, and comfort stepping into duels make him an attractive option, particularly for Premier League and European fixtures where physicality can be decisive.
Financially, Rangers are understood to value Fernandez far above the fee they paid, with figures around £25–30 million likely to be required to secure a deal this summer. Given his age, trajectory, and contract running until 2029, any move would require a significant commitment, but Arsenal may see it as an opportunity to secure a defender entering his peak years.
