Real start off with win

18 September 2007 - 21:37

Real Madrid have started off their Champions League campaign with a victory at the Bernebeu against German side Werder Bremen. The result was secured as van Nistelrooy scored to end the match at 2-1 to Madrid.

  • Raul nodded the home side ahead, but their lead only lasted a minute with Boubacar Sanogo providing a swift reply in the 17th minute. The Ivory Coast forward got ahead of marker Christoph Metzelder and flicked a shot through Iker CasillasÂ’ despairing dive.

The second half was less impressive and Ruud van Nistelrooy notched his 50th Champions League goal to earn Real Madrid three points.

The Dutch ace got in behind the defence and he finished with aplomb past Tim Wiese with a low drive into the bottom corner from Raul's through ball.

Werder Bremen did have a few late chances but it was not enough as Real Madrid held on to secure the perfect start.
