Thierry Henry scored his first goal for Barcelona as they defeated French champions Lyon 3-0 at the Nou Camp, but it was Lionel Messi that stole the headlines with a sterling performance.
The margin of victory barely reflected the verve and style of some parts of the Barcelona performance, although a spirited and well thought out second-half display from Alain Perrin's men gives them optimism for the remainder of Group E.
Barcelona got the ball rolling early on as Francois Clerc found his own net thanks to Messi's cross. He had caused havoc down the wing all night and looked very impressive.
Barcelona threw everything but the kitchen sink at Lyon and the Spaniards had chances galore. The Lyon keeper Rémy Vercoutre was a busy man, and Henry gave him a lot to worry about early on as he was only centimetres away from scoring from a Ronaldinho cross.
Alain Perrin sensed that as the Barcelona fans became more worried; and Barca could not finish the job off, he changed from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2.
However, it was not to be. In the 82nd minute a flowing move began between Deco, Andrés Iniesta and Messi that resulted in the Argentinian capping his night with a right-footed shot into the corner of the net.
Then the moment Barcelona fans had been waited for came in injury time, as Thierry Henry scored his first goal. Giovani Dos Santos supplied Henry with the perfect pass for his first goal in Barcelona colours.
