02 July 2008 - 00:46

Joey Barton will meet with Newcastle United officials, hopeful of returning for pre-season training, despite the fact that he was pleaded guilty to assaulting former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo in a training ground clash.

  • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
  • Arsenal suffer big injury blow ahead of Fulham game
  • Barton was pleaded guilty and is serving a six-month jail term, and reports suggested that Newcastle United might terminate his contract, although Barton is hopeful of playing agiain in the St James' Park.

Willie McKay, Barton's agent said that nothing can be said until the player is released. He added that they will sit and talk about his future and will be hoping to be back for pre-season training next week.

"Joey had a great end to the season and has kept himself in great shape.

"In fact, he is in the best shape I have ever seen him in and I think he will be fitter than anybody else."
