Juventus missed out on the chance to move within a point of leaders Internazionale and Lazio after losing 1-2 to Palermo at the Stadio delle Alpi in Serie A.
Levan Mchedlidze grabbed the winning goal with nine minutes remaining after Del Piero had equalised Fabrizio Miccoli's strike and Juve had Mohamed Sissoko sent off.
After a cagey start Palermo went ahead on 24 minutes with their first real chance on goal. Edison Cavani volleyed towards goal at the far post from a deep free-kick and Luigi Buffon could only parry into the path of Miccoli who fired into the net from close range.
Alessandro Del Piero equalised six minutes before the interval with a trade-mark free-kick. A weak defensive wall from Palermo failed to protect the goal and though Amelia got his hand to it, the shot was too strong to keep out.
Soon after drawing level though, fomer Liverpool midfielder Mohamed Sissoko was harshly shown a red card. His challenge in the middle of the park was slightly late but not deserving of a sending off.
That decision swung the momentum Palermo's way and they were able to enjoy a greater share of possession after the break.
Antonio Nocerino's clever movement and runs across the Juve back line caused the hosts problems but was guilty of just creeping offside in good positions.
Del Piero continued to threaten at the other end but he and Mauro German Camoranesi got in each other's way to waste their best chance of the second-half.
Palermo got their just rewards in the end taking a 2-1 lead in the 81st minute. Substitute Levan Mchedlidze scored after showing great pace to reach a through ball that split the Juve defence right down the middle and he shot left-footed first time past the stranded Buffon.
Pavel Nedved made an entrance for the Turin side late on but it was Nocerino who should have wrapped the game up shooting over from six yards after goalscorer Levan held up possession well in the Juve box.
