Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has publicly defender West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola. The Hammers have been on the slide of late, but O'Neill hopes that the troubles at Upton Park do not force the legendary Italian out of Premiership football and even more so, out of management.
West Ham find themselves languishing in the relegation zone, and ahead of the clash with Villa tonight, O'Neill commented on Zola's troublesome situation.
âThe job Zola has is very difficult given all the circumstances at the club,â said OâNeill. âHe has been impressive in what he has done so far, especially when you consider that circumstances have been particularly trying for him.
âBut he has got on with it and I canât think of anyone who is more popular than him. He is not living off that sentiment, because he knows that wonât take him too far.
âAnd he looks as if he has the temperament to go on and do it. These problems that are hitting him should stand him in good stead.
âI am sure he would have liked an easier passage and the ability to go and sign Kaka, but it will only be good for him. I donât think it will deter him.â
